A sustainable working model based on flexible coworking spaces is possible if the use of coworking spaces really grows strongly. A panel of experts convened by Coworking Europe in January 2021 reflected on the roadmap for coworking and flexible spaces to move from their current share of 2% to a projected 30% by 2030.

But beyond business strategies, it is important to reflect on the impact of this movement. Because it will allow us to move towards a more sustainable, more efficient and more competitive environment.

On the other hand, the EU's commitment to reducing the carbon footprint concerns us all. At eekox we firmly believe that we must look for more sustainable ways of doing things. At eekox we have analyzed what this growth in the use of flexible spaces means in terms of sustainability, efficiency and competitiveness. We have used Madrid as an example of the beneficial impact it would have on the city and its professionals.

We tell you about it below:

Reduce your ecological footprint

Sustainability

In Madrid there are 15.8M daily commutes, of which 2.65M are for work reasons. Do you know that if we had a teleworking rate of 10% we would be avoiding the emission of 157,653 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere? It is as if 12,612 homes in Madrid did not emit a single gram of greenhouse gases. If we were to reach the 30% predicted we would be talking about 37,837 homes and 472,959 tons of CO2 less in the atmosphere. Impressive.

It is time to change habits

Productivity

Perhaps the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is the most important parameter. But not the only one. Do you know that in Madrid 2.65M daily commutes are made for work purposes, with an average of 29 minutes per trip? These trips total an equivalent of 37,646,826 working days (of 8 hours) per year.

Do you know that if we had a teleworking rate of 10% we would not be wasting 2,484,624 working days per year in Madrid alone. It is the equivalent of throwing away the work of 1,380 professionals, or its equivalent in money, about 55M€.

Coworking and competitiveness

Following the previous example, if 30% of the work is done in flexible spaces of proximity, we would be making profitable 7,453,873 days, or what is the same, improving the productivity of the economy of the CAM in about 164M€.

A sustainable work model based on flexible coworking spaces is possible.
